Penmanship book belonging to Herman Schuette, used for instruction on how to properly form letters and words by following a printed example featured at the top of the page.
Herman was born on October 7, 1866, son of Henry Casper Schuette and Maria Biermann. He died in 1876. The Schuette family attended a one-room schoolhouse on Biesterfield Road, which was constructed in 1867. It was originally known as District No. 7, but was later nicknamed Biesterfield School. The white-frame school never enrolled more than 24 children at one time and served grades 1-8. The last graduating class was in 1948. It was later converted into a private home and eventually demolished in the 1980s.
