Mary McCathy moved to Elk Grove Village on May 17, 1960. In 1971, she worked for the Elk Grove Public Library in the Children's Department. During her residency in Elk Grove Village, she was affiliated with many local organizations including the Queen of the Rosary Catholic Church, Newcomers Club, Peony Village Garden Club, and was a charter Board member of the Elk Grove Historical Society.
In 1981, Mary McCarthy authored the book entitled "Elk Grove: The Peony Village," which featured a chronological overview of Elk Grove from the 1850s until the 1980s.
