In conjunction with Elk Grove Village's tencennial, a Beard Growing Contest was held for residents starting in April of 1966. A beard chart was posted at the Men's World of Barbering located at Route 83 and Landmeier Road as well as the Elk Grove Barber Shop located at the Park and Shop shopping center at Higgins Road and Arlington Heights. Road. The chart included images of various beards and mustaches for inspiration along with tips for trimming and shaping. To enter the contest, a resident male needed to be register in person, clean shaven, at one of the local barber shops.
The contestants were judged at the village picnic on June 26, 1966. Prizes were given in four categories: neat full beard, shaggy full beard, mustache and/or goatee, and specialty. The picnic was hosted at the Ned Brown Forest Preserve in areas 8 - 12. First place winners of the contest were announced in a Daily Herald article dated June 30, 1966: Bill Busse for neat full beard, Dick Wade for shaggy full beard, and Robert Oshito for goatee. Second place winners of the contest were: Harold Sutter and Larry Renolinski for neat full beard, Dick Beelendorf for shaggy full beard, Ed Widlak and Dick Koziatek for goatee. Third place winners of the contest were: Vern Rasmussen, Bill Schmidt, and Lyle Overby for neat full beard, Tom Rettenbacher and John Romano for mustache and goatee.
